Any There Any 2018 Six Nations Fixture Advantages?

Six Nations 2018 Fixture Dates

It was been suggested that setting the fixture dates for the Six Nations in 2018 did not go smoothly.  The declaration from Wales that they were no longer happy to play at home on a Friday night, forced a rethink of the fixture dates.  Also, as England refuse to play on a Friday night, it left Scotland and Ireland to fight out the hotly debated and much maligned early weekend fixture.

There was also talk of a shortened 5-week Six Nations, supported by the English RFU, but widely criticised by players and those involved in player welfare.

Now the dust has settled and the fixtures are set.  So does anyone have an advantage?

England vs Wales (10th February 2018)

Champions England open in Italy, but then face Wales in Twickenham only 6 days later.  Will there be enough time to recover?  Wales have the luxury of a home game against Scotland and a full 7 days recovery.  Maybe Eddie Jones should start writing his excuses for a potential England loss.

Wales vs France (17th March 2018)

The only time Wales will have less than 7 days to recover is before the final test against France.  However, 6 days earlier they play at Cardiff against Italy.  Not needing to travel should be advantageous.  Also, it is the last game of the tournament and so both sides will know what is needed to secure the title.  Could this be the title decider?

Ireland vs Italy (10th February 2018)

After facing defending champions England on the first weekend, albeit at home, Italy then travel to Ireland 6 days later to face the men in green.  With limited player resources, will the Azzurri be ready to face one of the favourites for the tournament?

Italy vs Scotland (17th March 2018)

Isn’t it strange how Italy, the weakest team in the tournament, are also given the toughest fixture dates.  For the 2nd time in 2018, Italy will be faced with a 6-day turnaround after facing Wales in Cardiff.  If points are needed on that final weekend, then a weakened and tired Azzuri could make a big difference to the final standings.
