Robert Jones Entertains Before Wales Beat England

Rugby Tales from Wales and British Lions Scrum Half Robert Jones

Legends Hospitality Rob Jones

From the moment Cardiff woke up on Saturday morning, there was a special buzz in the air.  It was Six Nations international day and the English were coming to town.

The Wales vs England fixture is always special, especially in Cardiff.  In recent years, England have had the upper hand, winning the last four games.  But there was belief in Wales.  The team had already won 11 test matches in a row and were going for a record twelfth.

Pre Match Warm Up with Robert Jones

Legends Hospitality Rob Jones

Our pre-match rugby lunch at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cardiff started with a rousing performance from the Cardiff Male Choir.  The Welsh voices rattled the rafters and brought tears to our guests eyes.

Then, Robert Jones treated our guests to some great rugby stories.  The British Lions and Wales scrum half talked about the infamous ‘Battle of Ballymore’ duel with Nick Farr-Jones in the second Lions test in 1989.  Robert also gave his views on the present Wales side, predicting a victory if the team performed to their true abilities.  His comments proved to be quite insightful.

After dinner, Wales and British Lions legendary full-back JPR Williams joined us for a Q&A.  He talked frankly about the modern game.  His comments about the importance of playing players in their recognised positions proved very astute, with Wales full back Liam Williams outstanding and being named Man Of The Match.

Amazing Newbridge artist Patrick Killian produced a painting of JPR at the event.  Patrick’s paintings feature many iconic sporting and boxing legends including Anthony Joshua.  He was also displaying an incredible painting of the 2005 Wales Grand Slam, signed by most of the players.

Our guests left for the stadium with smiles on their faces and stomachs full of food and beer.

A selection of photographs from the event can be seen on the website of our resident photographer Paul Fears Photography

A Marvellous Victory

In an astoundingly physical test match, Wales out-thought England to secure their record twelfth consecutive victory.  It was a hugely impressive performance against an England team touted as prospective Six Nations champions.

Wales march on to face Scotland in two week’s time.  And then return to Cardiff to face the present champions Ireland.

Hospitality for the Ireland Game

At the Wales v Ireland pre-match lunch on Saturday 16 March at 14:45, we will be joined by Wales and British Lions winger J J Williams (replacing former Wales lock and captain Gareth Llewellyn) and ex-Irish international Mick Quinn.  There are a small number of places left.  Please contact us as soon as possible to reserve a place.

Rugby Talk From Gareth Llewellyn

Wales Captain Entertains Guests Prior to Wales Playing Australia

Gareth Llewellyn is well respected as someone who doesn’t hold back with his opinions.  He speaks with great authority having made 92 appearances for Wales, captaining the side on 7 occasions.  Prior to Wales taking on Australia in Cardiff (10th November 2018), Gareth will be our guest at the pre-match hospitality lunch at the Radisson Blu Hotel.

Gareth Llewellyn wales-ireland-1994

Australia arrive in Wales having lost four of their six fixtures in the recent Rugby Championship including a rare home defeat to Argentina.  History tells us that a wounded Australia can be a dangerous animal.  However, there is excitement and hope in the Wales camp.  The successful Summer tour has raised expectations.

It will be interested to hear Gareth’s views on this renewed optimism.  This is the last Autumn series under the Gatland reign and is seen as an important stepping stone towards next year’s World Cup.  And who will Gareth select as the Wales number 7?

Gareth had a colourful rugby career.  He was part of the all-dominating Neath pack on the late 1980s early 1990s before moving across the water to Harlequins.  In 2000 he returned to Neath before joining regional rugby with the formation of the Ospreys in 2003.  As with many rugby players, he also enjoyed a short stay in France with Narbonne for the 2004 – 2005 season.

In recent years, he is widely acclaimed as a frankly honest rugby pundit.  It will be interesting to hear his views on Wales prospects for the next Six Nations and the forthcoming World Cup.

Rugby Hospitality Returns For Autumn Internationals

Rugby Greats Talk Rugby

International test match rugby returns to Cardiff this Autumn.  And Legends Hospitality has arranged for some of the game’s rugby greats to meet and talk to rugby fans before the game at pre-match hospitality events held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cardiff.

With the Rugby World Cup just 12 months away, the four test matches will provide Warren Gatland the opportunity to review his squad and pencil in names for the plane that leaves to Japan.

The Games

Craig ChalmersWales vs Scotland (Saturday, 3rd November – Kick Off: 2:45pm)

Although it is unusual to play a home nations side in the Autumn international series, this is an exciting test match.  Scotland failed to live up to expectations in the 2018 Six Nations and will be looking to reignite belief in Cardiff.

Prior to the game, ex Scotland and British and Irish Lions Fly-Half Craig Chalmers will be talking about life as a Scottish international and his rivalry with present Scotland coach Gregor Townsend.

Wales vs Australia (Saturday, 10th November – Kick Off:  5:20pm)

Australia’s form in the Rugby Championship has not been good, but when they play in Cardiff there always appears to be renewed vigour.  It will be interesting to hear what our guest, Gareth Llewellyn, has to say.  Gareth Llewellyn won 92 caps as a lock forward for Wales between 1989 and 2004, captaining the side on 7 occasions.  He also appears regularly on Scrum V and Radio Wales offering his well-respected views on the modern game of rugby.

Wales vs Tonga (Saturday, 17th November – Kick Off: 2:30pm)

legends_hospitality-3221.jpg

Wales last played Tonga at Eden Park in New Zealand in June 2017, winning 24-6.  Whenever the Tongans play we can expect fireworks and big collisions.  There are lower ticket prices to attract families to the game and we are also offering hospitality with a pre-match lunch at a special price of £29 per person or £99 for a family of four.  Our guest will be the mercurial James Hook, now playing for Ospreys and with a CV that includes the British and Irish Lions, Wales, Barbarians, Gloucester, and Perpignan.

Wales vs South Africa (Saturday, 24th November – Kick Off: 5:20pm)

Brynmor Williams All Blacks 1977

The final test is against South Africa.  The Springboks are still smarting after their defeat in the controversial test match in the USA last summer and will be buoyed by their victory against the All Blacks.  Before the test match, ex Wales and British & Irish Lions scrum-half Brynmor Williams will give us his thoughts.  In the 70s and 80s, Brynmor competed against Gareth Edwards and Terry Holmes for the Wales No. 9 shirt and still played 3 tests for the British and Irish Lions against the All Blacks in 1977.
