Dafydd James Talks Rugby

Dafydd James made his reputation in the red of the Scarlets, Wales and the British and Irish Lions in a rugby career that spanned over 15 years.  At our rugby lunch prior to the 2020 Six Nations test match between Wales and France, Dafydd talked about his life as a rugby player during a time of evolution into professionalism.  Since retiring as a player, Dafydd is regularly seen and heard as a rugby pundit on both television and radio.  Since 2010, Dafydd has also been a motivational speaker, fitness coach and personal trainer.

This was the second of three lunches held prior to Wales’ Six Nations games in Cardiff.  On the 14th March 2020, there is a Scottish flavour to our lunch prior to Wales playing Scotland when we are joined by Scotland and British Lions fly-half Craig Chalmers.

Six Nations 2020 Pre-Match Hospitality

Prior to the Wales Six Nations test matches in Cardiff, Legends Hospitality is hosting three pre-match hospitality lunches at the Radisson Blu in Cardiff.

Wales vs Italy (1st February 2020) with Garin Jenkins

Legends Hospitality Wales vs Ireland 2015-20

Between 1991 and 2002, Garin Jenkins won 58 caps as a hooker, including playing at the rugby world cup in 1991, 1995 and 1999.  He played his rugby at Swansea RFC, also captaining The Whites.  He was widely regarded as one of the hardest men in rugby and never took a step backward.  When Graham Henry became Wales coach in 1998. most people thought Garin’s Wales career was over.  However, under advice Henry brought Garin back into the fold and found one of the most committed and loyal players in his squad.

Wales vs France (22nd February 2020) with Dafydd James

Dafydd James started his career in 1995 with Bridgend RFC and went on to represent Wales 51 times, scoring 11 tries.  In 2001, he also played in all 3 British and Irish Lions tests in Australia and scored 1 of the 4 tries in the opening series victory.

Most of his career was spent flying down the wing.  He was quick and his size (6ft 4 1/2 inches) meant that he often terrorized his opposite number.

After starting his rugby union career with Bridgend RFC, he went on to represent 8 different clubs.  He first made a name for himself at Sardis Road with Pontypridd, before moving west to Llanelli in 1999.  His longest club association was with the Welsh regional side, Llanelli Scarlets, where we made 72 appearances between 2005 and 2009, scoring .  points. His ended his rugby playing career with English premiership side Sale in 2010.

Since 2009, Dafydd has been a familiar face on TV as a rugby union sports pundit, but is also a motivational speaker, fitness coach and personal trainer.

Wales vs Scotland (14th March 2020) with Craig Chalmers

Craig_Chalmers-6309

Since retiring, Craig has built a reputation as a well-respected motivational and after-dinner speaker, featuring in rugby and sports events across the UK.

Facts on Wales vs Australia

There is always a special buzz around when Wales take on the Wallabies.  Maybe it is because out of all the Southern Hemisphere sides, Wales have tasted success more frequently against the men in gold.

Here are some other facts about Wales playing Australia (updated on 7th November 2018):

  • They have played each other 41 times, with 30 victories to the Wallabies, 10 to Wales and 1 draw;
  • Australia have outscored Wales 973 to 625 in all 41 tests;
  • Australia is presently on their longest winning streak against Wales (13 tests since November 2009);
  • Highest Wallaby victory was 63 -6 in Australia on 22 July 1991;
  • Highest Wales victory was 28-3 in Wales on 20 December 1975;
  • The 2 teams first met in Wales on 12 December 1908 with Wales winning 9-6;
  • The Wallabies 15-6 win in the 2015 Rugby World Cup test in Twickenham was the first time neither side have scored a try;

This year’s Wales vs Australia looks like being another humdinger, with the Wallabies smarting and wounded after a poor Rugby Championship down under.
