Wales vs Ireland Rugby Lunch in Cardiff

The 2019 Six Nations was drawing to a close with a Wales vs Ireland Grand Slam decider in Cardiff.  Rugby fans were flooding into the Welsh capital from all over Wales and Ireland.  There was an air of expectation hanging in the wind swept rain.

At the Radisson Blu in Cardiff, guests took shelter from the awful weather, enjoying a 3-course meal swilled down by plenty of beer and wine.  The room was also serenaded by the Cardiff Male Choir.

Rugby Stories

Our first guest speaker on the day was Wales and British Lions winger J. J. Williams.  JJ featured in many of the Wales rugby victories in the 1970s.  In 1974, he toured South Africa with the Lions and was a revelation on the hard grounds.  He played in all four tests.  He toured with the Lions for a second time in 1978 and played in three tests against the New Zealand All Blacks.

However, the room was reduced to tears of laughter when Mick Quinn took the stage.  Between 1973 and 1981, Quinn won ten caps for Ireland as a fly-half.  There was a twinkle in his eye and a cheeky grin on his face as he told his rugby stories.

The Grand Slam

The focus then returned to the Wales vs Ireland game.  There was a quiet buzz of confidence from all those wearing red.  After Wales had demolished Ireland in a one-side 25-7 Grand Slam winning victory, guests returned to the Radisson Blu wet from the heavy rain but with huge smiles etched on their faces.

In the warmth of the Radisson Blu, our guests watched the incredible England vs Scotland Six Nations game as they enjoyed some post match food and celebrated with beer and wine.

Saturday 16th March 2019 had been a perfect day!

Wales Play Ireland In Grand Slam Decider

Six Nations 2019 Climax in Cardiff

On Saturday 16^th March 2019, Wales will have the chance to secure the Six Nations championship and secure their twelfth Grand Slam.  But how good is this Wales team and do they deserve to have a chance of a Grand Slam?  Let’s look at the facts and figures.

The Recent Wales Record

1. The Wales team is on a record twelve match winning sequence. In that time they have beaten South Africa, Australia and England;
2. The last side to beat Wales was Ireland (37-27) on the 24th February 2018 in Dublin.
3. Their self-belief was evident in the opening Six Nations game against France. At half time, Wales trailed by 16 points after 2 France tries.  3 tries in the second half contributed to a 24-19 victory.  A record comeback in any Six or Five Nations championship game;
4. Wales changed 10 players to face Italy in Rome in their second Six Nations game. Despite a struggle, Wales win 26-15, scoring and conceding 2 tries;
5. The old enemy arrived in Cardiff on a formidable run of form. England had beaten the much-fancied Ireland in Dublin and demolished France at Twickenham.  Scoring 2 tries to England’s 1, Wales secured a famous and impressive victory 21-13;
6. As the only unbeaten side in the 2019 Six Nations, Wales travelled to Scotland. They became only the second team in three years to beat Scotland at Murrayfield.  After a controlled first half scoring 2 tries, they withstood a barrage of Scottish attack to win 18-11;

The Grand Slam

Wales’ final Six Nations game is against Ireland in Cardiff.  Three Grand Slams have been secured by Wales in the Six Nations era:

1. 2005 when Wales beat Ireland 32-20 in the final game Cardiff and secured their first Grand Slam since 1978;
2. 2008, in Gatland’s first season as coach, when Wales beat France 29-12 in the final game in Cardiff;
3. 2012 when entertained France in the final game again and secured a 16-9 win in Cardiff;

On paper, Ireland start as favourites.  Apart from their loss against England, the Irish form in recent years has been fantastic and includes a famous victory against New Zealand.  They have got better with each game through the Six Nations, including the destruction of France in Dublin.

The Wales vs Ireland Six Nations game will be physical and the question is whether Wales’ belief and exceptional work ethic can inspire them to secure that final Grand Slam and Six Nations championship winning victory.
