Derek Bevan is widely recognised as one of the best ever rugby union referees. In all illustrious career, Derek officiated over 11 Rugby World Cup games and 44 tests. After hanging up his boots, he became a Television Match Official (TMO), finally retiring in May 2016.
Derek presided over rugby matches before there was extensive camera coverage. The game of rugby union was very different, with often violent encounters between players. With wit and authority, Derek developed a reputation as one of the world’s best referees. His career pinnacle was refereeing the 1991 Rugby World Cup final at Twickenham when Australia beat England 12-6. He is only one of eight to referee a World Cup Final.
On Friday 7th February 2020, Glyncorrwg RFC hosted ‘An Evening with Derek Bevan’.
