Rugby Tales from Wales and British Lions Scrum Half Robert Jones
From the moment Cardiff woke up on Saturday morning, there was a special buzz in the air. It was Six Nations international day and the English were coming to town.
The Wales vs England fixture is always special, especially in Cardiff. In recent years, England have had the upper hand, winning the last four games. But there was belief in Wales. The team had already won 11 test matches in a row and were going for a record twelfth.
Pre Match Warm Up with Robert Jones
Our pre-match rugby lunch at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cardiff started with a rousing performance from the Cardiff Male Choir. The Welsh voices rattled the rafters and brought tears to our guests eyes.
Then, Robert Jones treated our guests to some great rugby stories. The British Lions and Wales scrum half talked about the infamous ‘Battle of Ballymore’ duel with Nick Farr-Jones in the second Lions test in 1989. Robert also gave his views on the present Wales side, predicting a victory if the team performed to their true abilities. His comments proved to be quite insightful.
After dinner, Wales and British Lions legendary full-back JPR Williams joined us for a Q&A. He talked frankly about the modern game. His comments about the importance of playing players in their recognised positions proved very astute, with Wales full back Liam Williams outstanding and being named Man Of The Match.
Amazing Newbridge artist Patrick Killian produced a painting of JPR at the event. Patrick’s paintings feature many iconic sporting and boxing legends including Anthony Joshua. He was also displaying an incredible painting of the 2005 Wales Grand Slam, signed by most of the players.
Our guests left for the stadium with smiles on their faces and stomachs full of food and beer.
A Marvellous Victory
In an astoundingly physical test match, Wales out-thought England to secure their record twelfth consecutive victory. It was a hugely impressive performance against an England team touted as prospective Six Nations champions.
Wales march on to face Scotland in two week’s time. And then return to Cardiff to face the present champions Ireland.
