Rory Lawson and Alix Popham Predictions Proved Wrong

Wales 34-7 victory against Scotland caught both our guests off guard.  Rory and Alix joined us for the pre-match entertainment and lunch at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cardiff.  Their was a general thought that this would be a close game, but Wales dominated.  It was a sign of things to come.

March

David Duckham Entertains at the Parc Golf Club in Newport

David Duckham was the blonde bombshell of his time, electrifying stadiums with his graceful, swerving running.  He was so good that the Wales rugby public adopted him as one of their own, naming his ‘Dai Duckham’.  During the evening he talked about playing for England, the Barbarians and the British and Irish Lions.

Rugby Union Tales from Wales Scrum Half Robert Jones

On Friday 20th July 2018, Wales and British and Irish Lions scrum half, Robert Jones, captivated the audience at Pontypridd Golf Club with stories of his life in rugby union.

Legends Hospitality Rob Jones

In a career that spanned 19 years, Robert Jones is highly regarded as one of the most talented scrum halves ever to have played for Wales.  He spent the whole of his career with Swansea RFC, debuting in 1983 as an 18 year-old, before hanging up his boots in the 2001/2 season.  He played 286 games and captained Swansea for two seasons between 1989 and 1991.

His first cap for Wales came in 1986 and we went on to win 54 caps, scoring 19 points.  He formed a formidable partnership with outside half Jonathan Davies and was a key part of the team that secured Wales’ highest position of 3rd in the Rugby World Cup in 1987.

However, it is Robert’s duel with Nick Farr-Jones in the 1989 British and Irish Lions tour of Australia that sticks in the memory of many rugby union enthusiasts.  The Lions had been heavily beaten in the first test and Robert recalled how coach, Ian McGeechan, identified the importance of upsetting the game of the Wallabies key player Farr-Jones.

Legends Hospitality Rob Jones

At an early scrum, Robert explained how he came to blows with Farr-Jones, a confrontation that escalated into a full scale pitch brawl between both sets of players.  The Lions went on to win the ‘Battle of Ballymore’ 19-12 and take the series into a final decider, which they also won 19-18.  It was the first test series win for the Lions since the famous 1974 tour of South Africa.

A selection of photographs from the event can be seen on the website of photographer Paul Fears.
